George Washington was Even Cooler Than We Thought He Was

George Washington, remembered by history as the first American president and the father of the country, lived a life often shrouded in myth.

Readers likely remember hearing the tale of Washington cutting down a cherry tree and refusing to lie about it, his wooden teeth, or other stories. Neither of these things are true, but his heroism and commitment to the cause of American independence from Britain are.

Virtually every aspect of George Washington seemed designed for greatness. Standing at 6’3 in the late 18th century, he towered above just about everyone he came into contact with. While admittedly not the most efficient tactician, his valor in battle more than made up for his strategical shortcomings. And though he didn’t have the charm of Benjamin Franklin or the same way with words as Thomas Jefferson, his commanding presence demanded the loyalty of everyone around him.

Sure, Washington enjoys a venerable status in American history. Normally, romanticized images of historical figures are undercut by what actually happened. In the case of George Washington, however, it’s precisely the opposite. The more one learns about this incredible man, the more venerable he seems to become.
