Michigan Clerk Files Criminal Complaint Against Resident for Mocking Mail-In Voting

A Michigan resident who thinks that mail-in voting is a waste of time put up a toilet on their front yard with a sign stating “Place Mail-In Ballots Here.” One would expect that the move would perhaps arouse the ire of the neighbors or the homeowner’s association. However, in today’s world, a political joke is no longer as innocent as it once was.

Michigan Clerk Barb Byrum has filed a criminal complaint against the person who posted the sign because, according to Michigan law, taking illegal possession of a mail-in ballot is a criminal offense that is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $1,000 fine.

Police are currently investigating the “crime” and it remains to be seen if legal action will be taken, but even the threat of it should give people pause. This is, after all, a toilet. It’s not made to look like an actual drop-box where residents can place mail-in votes. It’s set up on a lawn in a residential neighborhood not too far from a sign calling for current Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to be recalled. It’s hard to see how anyone could mistake the toilet for a place to deposit mail-in ballots.

Clerk Byrum, who clearly doesn’t think much of her community, has other ideas. She notes that millions of people are voting by mail for the first time and may not be familiar with all the procedures for doing so. This much may be true but it’s this is obviously a stretch.

As some commentators have aptly suggested, anyone who thinks that a toilet on a private lawn is a ballot box really has no business voting in the first place.

Clerk Byrum goes on to state that the person who set up the toilet with the sign is “making a mockery of our elections” and says that she won’t stand by and watch it happen.

She has a point; the owner of the home with the offending toilet doesn’t seem to think much of the vote-by-mail process. However, this is a free county and according to the First Amendment of the Constitution, a person can mock the election process as much as he or she would like. It’s perfectly legal to insinuate that mail-in votes should be dumped in the toilet because America allows for free speech.

While the entire “toilet debacle” is certainly humorous to those who still have a sense of humor, those who care about the direction the country is heading should be alarmed. These problems are likely to become more commonplace as liberals, desperate to win the upcoming vote, do everything in their power to shut down anyone who dares to disagree with them.
