It’s no secret that conservatives strongly dislike former Vice President Joe Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris. What is shocking is that a recent Rasmussen poll has revealed that they aren’t alone.
A whopping 52% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning voters wish the former VP wasn’t the DNC candidate. What’s more, African-Americans, a core constituency that the Democrat Party needs to excite in order to win any election, is turned off by the selection of Sen. Kamala Harris as Biden’s running mate. In fact, nearly one out of three black voters have said they are less likely to vote for the Democratic presidential candidate than they were before he made his ill-fated VP selection.
The polls did not reveal why so many voters aren’t enthused by the Democratic candidates. Naturally, demographics have been thrown out as an explainer. Pundits have pointed out the obvious fact that Sen. Kamala Harris isn’t African in heritage, but rather Indian/Jamaican. Her family aren’t descendants of slaves, but rather descendants of slave owners.
But it’s Harris’ policy that really has her in hot water. The former attorney general of California spent a large portion of her professional career looking for ways to lock up African-American men rather than address the challenges the black community faces.
Biden faces his own challenges which are well documented. The party is still reeling from a primary season that saw a large minority of enthusiastic Democratic voters turn out for progressive Senator Bernie Sanders. While Sen. Sanders has backed his former rival and encouraged his supporters to do the same, many progressives aren’t having it.
At the same time, Biden’s painfully obvious problems with forming cohesive sentences haven’t gone unnoticed — even by militant Trump haters. Another Rasmussen poll has revealed that 20% of Democrat voters believe the former VP has dementia, and an overwhelming majority of voters think former Biden needs to address the issue. His response has been to lecture a reporter who dared to broach the subject, asking if the reporter was a junkie.
If the Democratic nominee is unable to prove his mental prowess, he could lose ground with voters who may opt to stay home rather than take chances with a Harris presidency.
The Democratic Party brought out a star-studded cast for its virtual convention to enthuse voters about a Biden-Harris ticket. However, honest polls are showing that the DNC’s efforts are falling flat. And who could blame them? Biden doesn’t excite people the way President Donald Trump does. And if history shows us anything, passion candidates are often winning candidates. In this regard, having Kamala Harris as a running mate isn’t even the worst problem.
