British pop singer Adele has sparked a controversy — for reasons scientists are still unable to explain — by posting a photo of herself revealing she has lost a considerable amount of weight.
Adele, like almost every other celebrity, hasn’t been in the spotlight much lately. With the global coronavirus pandemic still at the center of everyone’s minds, people like Adele have been demoted in our culture’s priority list. Nevertheless, this class of individuals still has the power to completely ruin other people’s lives simply by sharing that they are improving their own.
By any objective measure, Adele losing weight is a good thing — because having excessive body fat is considered unhealthy and unappealing by just about every human being on the planet. However, many of the pop singer’s fans are deeply offended by the fact that Adele would “fat shame” them simply by dieting.
The headlines coming from the mainstream media right now are truly hilarious. Here’s a couple of our favorites:
“Adele’s weight loss is a double blind” — Buzzfeed News
“The right way to respond to Adele’s weight loss” — CNN
“Why the photo of a new, slimmer Adele makes women like me feel uncomfortable” — The Telegraph
When did our culture become so unapologetically pathetic? In fact, let’s back up a beat — why should the body mass index of a pop singer mean anything to anyone for any reason at all?
