Hawaii Representative Tulsi Gabbard became the final Democrat with a national following to end her White House bid and endorse Joe Biden for president.
Gabbard’s presidential campaign failed to gain any substantial traction throughout its entire run. While she did distinguish herself through her military background and presenting herself as notably less hostile towards President Donald Trump and his supporters, it wasn’t enough to earn her any favors with Democratic partisans.
The Hawaii lawmaker is perhaps best-known for her Ron Paul-style take on foreign policy, which emphasizes de-escalating America’s needless involvement in foreign conflicts. This is a rare area where a Democrat’s platform overlaps with President Trump’s.
Gabbard also committed political suicide by being one of the only Democratic lawmakers to vote against moving forward with impeaching the president. Because of this, she has a decent reputation among Republicans, and is now cast aside by her Democratic colleagues.
Make no mistake: Gabbard is a Democrat for a reason. Her social and economic policies aren’t terribly different from that of Bernie Sanders. The fact that she will not be commander-in-chief is without a doubt a good thing.
But here’s there real story: Gabbard styled herself as a political maverick who was bucking the DNC establishment. This image appeared to be legitimate, considering the obvious attempts by Democratic Party leadership to squash her campaign. However, as soon as her campaign ended, the Hawaii rep put all of her political weight behind establishment hack Joe Biden.
