The Senate confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court, were bound to get nasty. But just how nasty they have gotten is quite unbelievable. One of the latest incidents proves that.
Democratic Senator Kamala Harris from California decided to twist some of Kavanaugh’s words. She conveniently used just a small portion – only ten seconds – from a video of Kavanaugh’s senate hearings and posted it as a standalone piece on Twitter.
In the video clip, Kavanaugh said the following:
“Filling out the form would make them complicit in the provision of the abortion-inducing drugs that they were, as a religious matter, objected to.”
Kavanaugh was referring to a prior court case, which involved the pro-life group Priests for Life. in that case, Priests for Life were challenging the Affordable Care Act contraceptive mandate because they believed it went against their religious beliefs.
So, Kavanaugh was not stating his own views. Just before what he said in the video clip, he had said “In that case, they said…” Adding those words makes all the difference in the understanding of the clip that Harris posted.
Harris, who attended the hearing and questioned the judge herself, obviously knew that, but instead tried to make it seem like Kavanaugh was stating his own view that birth control is considered “abortion-inducing drugs.” That is not at all what Kavanaugh was saying, nor has he stated that to be his stance on birth control.
“Kavanaugh chooses his words very carefully, and this is a dog whistle for going after birth control,” Harris said in the post. “He was nominated for the purpose of taking away a woman’s constitutionally protected right to make her own health care decisions. Make no mistake – this is about punishing women.
It is utterly ridiculous to insinuate that Trump nominated Kavanaugh with the intention to take away women’s health care decision-making authority. Anyone who watched the hearings, or watches the readily available video of the hearings, within context, can clearly see that is not what Kavanaugh was saying. But those like Harris will stop at nothing to foil Kavanaugh.
This was an instance in which the context of the comment had to be seen to understand the full meaning of that small clip. In the same way, one cannot read only one paragraph of a book chapter and expect to understand the full chapter. One would need to read the entire chapter to understand the full meaning and intent.
As if Harris’ obvious attempt in lying to the American public wasn’t bad enough, Planned Parenthood joined Harris in taking the Kavanaugh comments out of context. And the anti-Trump media jumped on the bandwagon as they salivated over the deceptively edited video clip.
Trump’s opponents are really desperate to see to it that Kavanaugh is not confirmed. Stooping to a new low was just another play out of their deception-filled playbook.
